Preschool Language Learning App

Preschool Language Learning App

The Challenge

Preschool-aged children learning English as an additional language need real speaking practice, not just listening and tapping through multiple-choice screens. Building speech recognition that works reliably for very young non-native speakers — inconsistent pronunciation, background noise, a still-developing vocabulary — is a much harder problem than the adult-facing speech apps most speech SDKs are built around.

Our Approach

We built the core loop around actually scoring a child’s attempt to say a word out loud, using Soapbox for speech recognition across a growing word set, rather than defaulting to a tap-to-answer quiz format the way most kids’ edutainment apps do. Daily games introduce new vocabulary in small batches so a child isn’t overwhelmed with a large word list at once, and profile management plus score tracking let the app follow an individual child’s progress across repeat sessions instead of resetting every time they open it. Catchy jingles were built into the retention loop deliberately, on the theory that a child remembers a word tied to a tune longer than one shown once on a flashcard screen.

Key Features

  • Speech recognition across multiple words via Soapbox, scoring pronunciation attempts rather than passive multiple choice
  • Profile management for individual child progress tracking
  • Score tracking carried across sessions
  • Daily games introducing new vocabulary in small batches
  • Catchy jingles built specifically to reinforce word retention and engagement

Outcome

Built for preschool children learning English as an additional language, taking cues from category leaders like Lingokids while building its own speak-and-score core loop rather than a listen-only or tap-only format.
