02.WebAR: Augmented Reality Without an App Download

For projects where install friction is the main risk, we can build using WebAR frameworks like 8th Wall, AR.js, and Babylon.js, so a customer scans a QR code or taps a link and the AR experience loads directly in their mobile browser — no app store, no install. Most of our shipped AR work to date has been native, built with ARKit and ARCore; WebAR is available when browser-only access is the priority for a specific campaign or activation.

When a project needs deeper device integration, like persistent world tracking, occlusion, or tighter performance than a browser allows, we build native using ARKit on iOS and ARCore on Android. This is the right call for AR features embedded inside an existing app rather than a standalone campaign experience.

Do customers need to download an app to use WebAR?

No. WebAR runs directly in the phone’s browser, so a customer just taps a link or scans a QR code and the AR experience opens immediately. This is usually the right choice for marketing, product visualization, and try-on experiences where you can’t rely on someone installing an app first.

What’s the difference between WebAR and native app AR?

WebAR trades some tracking precision and performance for zero-friction access, no install, works instantly from a link. Native AR (ARKit/ARCore) offers deeper device integration and more consistent performance, at the cost of requiring an app install. We’ll recommend based on whether the AR feature is a standalone campaign or part of an existing app.
