CASE STUDY · BRAIN CONTROLLED GAME

Mind Race: a game you play with your focus

Mind Race is a desktop game controlled by the player’s brain. Wearing a NeuroSky brainwave sensor, players focus on a glowing particle to speed it up and finish the track. The harder they concentrate, the faster it goes.

THE PROBLEM

Can you win a race with your mind?

Brainwave headsets can measure how focused a person is, but on their own the readings are just numbers on a screen.

The client wanted to turn focus into something people can see, feel and improve, in a way that is fun to repeat.

It had to work with an affordable consumer headset, not lab equipment.

HOW WE SOLVED IT

Turn concentration into speed

We built a racing game where the only controller is the player’s attention.

  1. 01

    Focus to move

A glowing particle races along a track. The more the player concentrates, the faster it moves.

THE CHALLENGEBrainwave signals are noisy and change from moment to moment.
HOW WE SOLVED ITWe smoothed the readings so speed responds to real focus, not to random spikes.
  2. 02

    Feedback you can see

Players watch their focus turn into speed in real time, so they learn what concentration feels like.

THE CHALLENGEIf feedback is too slow or too jumpy, players cannot connect it to what they are doing.
HOW WE SOLVED ITWe tuned the response so changes in focus show up on screen quickly and clearly.
  3. 03

    Built for a consumer headset

The game works with a NeuroSky brainwave sensor that anyone can buy.

THE CHALLENGEConsumer sensors are less precise than lab equipment.
HOW WE SOLVED ITWe designed the game around what the headset measures well, so it stays fair and fun.
  4. 04

    A reason to play again

Completing the track gives players a clear goal, and a reason to try to beat their own focus.

THE CHALLENGEBrain training only works if people come back.
HOW WE SOLVED ITWe built the race around short, repeatable runs that are easy to start again.
THE OUTCOME

Concentration, made into a game

Mind Race turns an invisible skill, focus, into a race players can see, feel and improve.

  • No controller: your attention is the input
  • Real time feedback from a consumer brainwave headset
  • A foundation for focus training, wellness or education games
